Trumpeting New Life for the Wild

For the last 33 years we have lovingly tended an original log home, built in 1896 from huge trees that were felled on our beautiful country acreage in South West Canada. The sprawling rancher-style home is at elevation 650 feet, nestled in a natural setting overlooking Mount Baker in neighbouring Washington USA. All the landscaping we have done has been with keeping the property an open invitation & sanctuary for all wildlife & birds that share their lives & newborn/hatched young with us. Each Spring we adorn the exterior of our home with many brightly coloured Petunia hanging baskets. Deadheading the petunias at night is my 'quiet-time' akin to setting the stage props for the orchestra of birds that start their performance well before early day break. Magical is the word that comes to mind for the wonderful explosion of melodic sounds bestowed on us each day. The explosions of Petunia colours are symbolically trumpeting the song of new wildlife about to occur.

Great shot and great writeup. Only other time I heard the word "Deadheading" was from my wife -- I thought she made it up.

Many thanks for taking the time to comment Jane & Dave ~ appreciate it. Yes, healthy happy petunias that really produce lots of blooms right to first frost if all the spent flowers are clipped off at the blossom stem on a daily basis. (Stops the annual plant from going to seed.) Deadheading is a rather unusual word isn't it Dave....gotta' wonder who came up with it.

How very beautiful! It's not wonder the birds love to visit. Your care of the Petunias really pays off when they bloom like this! Fine shooting...with flash? Gave a very nice, dark background.

Many thanks for your time too Lucy ~ appreciate it. Re: flash question ~ yes, I used flash (in camera flash only). There was also an under the eave 100 watt lightbulb just to the right. This was taken in the wee early hours on the sixth & these baskets are hanging in front of a very dark coloured outside wall. Re: Petunia's blooms ~ I use Miracle Grow once every week & keep the soil moist but well drained. Thanks again.
