Daruma Dust Pile
by Jim Graham (jim-g)
Camera:
Ricoh GR Digital
Location:
Ageo City in Saitama prefecture

Japan

Photographer Notes:
The Bodhidharma is said to have been the Indian founder of Zen Buddhism, a "wall-gazer" of legend without arms or legs which the Japanese have rendered into caricature as depicted here. The doll is traditionally purchased in the New Year. One pupil is painted in with the other left blank until the purchaser's wish comes true, whereupon the other pupil is painted in. Then the doll, known as 'Daruma' in Japanese, is properly disposed of on sacred ground at this time of year, in this case, a local Shinto shrine.
