A Hover-Hunting White-Tailed Kite

Photographer Notes:
A small hawk, White-tailed Kites hunt from the air, staying in one spot then dropping down on the ground to their prey. This juvenile (note the brown chest band) held position in this same spot for a good 20 seconds, affording me a chance to get good sharp shots of its hunting technique. Taken with the Sigma "Bigma" 50-500mm lens, ISO 200, f7.1, 1/1000 sec @ 500mm.

Outstanding stop action timing and major pose as it hovers above. Having "20" seconds is not much time to get it all perfect but you managed it. Big congratulations on a superb image!

I've had the opportunity to go out with Steve photo-birding. It is humbling to watch really. He has great patience and great timing. 10-1 I'll be fumbling with my camera not even up to my eye yet and Steve will have got the shot. One can get lucky now and then, and I've yet to be lucky as this shot! But Steve consistently comes away with great BIF images. I know why, I've watched him in action!
