Flower Vendor
by William MacKenzie (wmackenzie)
Camera: Sony Cyber Shot DSC-R1
Location: Havana
Cuba
Photographer Notes: As I started to take a picture of the flower vendor, his neighbor moved into the frame. I thought two are better than one and expanded to include him. I have often thought about what makes a great picture. Many that I like never get picked in competition. Other I submit, that I think are okay but not great get picked. The other night when this picture came up on the screen, I said to my wife “I really like that shot.” She asked me why. I don’t really know… it just talks to me. It captures some of my perceptions of Cuba… the curiosity in the neighbor’s face… the feeling of poverty… the friendliness of the Cubans. Photographically it has depth of field, sharpness and balanced exposure, but in the final analysis… “I just like the shot”.
