Sorry, how can a documentary picture of piece of art win a prize? On technical merit? But how can that be, when the framing is such that there's a tree growing out of the little one's head? And a messy background that distracts?

I like the contrast. The gray on gray. The strength with the fragile. The backdrop of winter and the warmth of love. The picture moves me.

I like the picture. I wasn't distracted by the backdrop. I was struck (by the face of the child) at the peace you have when you know you are loved. The picture is strong.

For Sterling I submitted other photos which are just like this, were centered better. As to why they choose this one, I don’t know. This is a photo of the baptism of Kizzy from the autobiography/movie ROOTS….This is why I tried to include the branches in the picture to signify the FAMILY TREE. However if you are not familiar with the story or African American History you properly wouldn’t understand the meaning of the picture in the first place.
