Hey, Bud! Looks like we have a few from the DpReview Pentax forum here... :o) I never thought Grackles could be pretty, but your pic proves me wrong. What a sheen this one has. Congrats on the POTD, my friend!

I doubt anyone could take a better shot of this bird Bud.
Marco Sauer commented on April 28, 2007 09:37:
Great picture, Bud. (Can someone verify that this is a Grackle? By looking at my guide book it looks more like a Brewer's Blackbird)

You are so right - with the correct lighting one can see this bird is a color marvel. Congratulations!

Beautiful light and colors, Bud! Congratulations on your POTD!
Bud commented on April 28, 2007 21:55:
Thanks, everyone, for the comments! Marco - I can, in fact, verify that this is a Common Grackle. We have a community of them that nest here every year. The combination of rain and lighting in this shot creates a rather extreme view of this particular bird. In different lighting, he looks a lot more "common" and just like the field guide example of a male grackle.

Thanks Bud! I'm trying to learn my birds and sometimes they are hard to tell from another by going with the guide book.
Bud commented on April 28, 2007 22:36:
Marco - Happy to assist. Blackbirds and sparrows can be tough to distinguish from each other, but that's a big part of the fun in this "birding" thing! I think we have 4 different guides we use regularly during spring and fall migrations, and it's not uncommon to cross-reference with all of them to narrow down an ID for a specific bird. Good luck with your birding adventures and your K10D!
