Photographer Notes:
Gopher tortoises excavate burrows in the loose sandy soil that makes up this part of the state. Unfortunately my dog , Oliver, dug up this one's burrow. I took the opportunity to get some shots before returning this fellow to his natural habitat. This species is federally protected except in Florida, where it is listed as a species of special concern.
