Photographer Notes: St. Augustine, the oldest European settlement in the United States was founded by the Spanish in 1565, given to the British by treaty in 1740, returned to the Spanish by treaty in 1783 and ceded to the United States in 1821. The fortress has never been captured in battle. This is a reinactment of the British holding.
