Photographer Notes: A spined soldier beetle nymph feeds on a gypsy moth caterpillar. The gypsy moth is considered to be the most damaging insect pest of hardwood trees in the eastern United States. Annually, the gypsy moth is responsible for close to 2 million acres of forest defoliation across the U.S. These soldier beetles are doing their part to keep the parks green! Shenandoah National Park
