Great Pumpkin Weigh-In
by Kathy Shogren (shogy)
Camera:
Canon EOS 30-D
Location:
Assaria, Kansas

United States of America

Photographer Notes:
A great pumpkin contest was held at the Smoky Hill Bison Company near my hometown of Assaria KS. This was my first time to view this type of contest. I didn't stay long enough to view the official winner, but the Journal reported that it was from Liberal, weighing in at 880#. They were expecting another entry from Newton that was near 1000#. However it was reported that vandals destroyed that entry, which would have been the winner at 976#. They were able to salvage some seeds from it, so maybe next year.

Beautiful place to hold the contest, too...love the wide open windy spaces, Kathy! That's one heavy pumpkin! I've tried to purchase those seeds before for giant pumpkins and you get three in a pack...never had any luck with them. Wonderful capture of an autumn tradition!

Sad that vandals destroyed the leading entry. It is a shame! Thanks for the writeup - I saw a documentary on the work that goes into growing the big pumpkins and you have to appreciate their efforts!

WOW, that will make a few pies. Too bad about the other pumpkin, some people just have no respect for others. Great capture of a home town event.

Great idea to capture this home town event, Kathy! I cannot even image a pumpkin weighing 880#. Wonder how many pies it would make? Thanks for the narrative and so sorry to hear of the vandalism. Love the candid shot and the flowers in the foreground.
