Junco & Family at Feeding Time
by Maureen Bisson (H-May)
Camera:
Kodak P850
Location:
British Columbia

Canada

Photographer Notes:
A male leg-banded (blue, red, red, metal) Dark-eyed Junco arrived at our acreage on April 29th, 2008. I enquired many leads all over North America hoping to obtain information about where/when/why he was leg-banded. Found out he was leg-banded by Dr. John Marzluff in 2007, as a breeding After Year Hatching at a forest acreage managed by University of Washington, USA. Little 'Banded' has stayed with us since his arrival across the border, has found a mate and they now have three youngsters at their side. In the 'Family' photo taken today, 'Banded' is feeding one of the youngsters, his mate is top center & the other two are their other fledglings. My sighting of 'Banded' helped explain the lack of resites at the banding location in the States. It's been a joy having 'Banded' with us and a delightful bonus to see his new family!

What a great story! I do like these little birds. I feed them too, but have never noticed any banded ones. Cute image!

Thanks for your ever welcome comments Joyce, Bren & Terry. Update to August 8th is that on August 10th 'Banded' was tending 5 fledglings. He was feeding the newest 2 only, and the other 3 were right with them but managing to find food all on their own. As of today August 14th, none of them are being fed by 'Banded' ~ thus I don't get to hear the delightful 'peeping' anymore.:( Have it all on video so can listen to them and watch the feeding-time anytime all year long. :)
