More Prayers Needed for Rick Slaven

  ...AzColt's cancer is getting worse

Published in Photography News by Kevin L. Kitchens on February 21, 2009 00:23

One of the first POTD sites I submitted to and won was Rick Slaven's AzColt.com site. As many of you know, Rick has been battling brain cancer over the past few years and having small victories with many surgeries. But it's appearing the surgeries have not been enough.

His site went idle around January 22, 2009 and doing some research turned up the following posted two days later by former member Mark Westake on Shutterbugs.biz:

Hi mARK,

Im really sick...I have been falling down and I am now like I was before the first brain surgery.....Next Friday I am going back in to surgery again as the tumor is growing....this will not cure it but it will give me some more time....feel free to pass this on my brother....

Rick

He had the surgery on January 30 and Mark received this from Rick's wife Marilyn the next day.

We didn't get the results we were looking for. The tumor has spread farther into the brain. The surgeon said he has done all he can. He inserted some radioactive wafers & closed him up. Now we can only hope to buy him some quality time.

That was three weeks ago and I have nothing further.

Sickness and death are all part of this sinful world we live in, but through prayers we can still appeal to the Almighty God, Creator of this universe for His healing on Rick. At the very least, I pray that Rick's remaining time will be full of joy, peace, comfort, and the love of his family and friends.

He has meant a great deal to the POTD community and will hopefully be able to contribute even more.

My thoughts and prayers are with Rick and his family daily. I hope he is comfortable and knows how many people do care for him. He has always been so kind to me and I have always admired his outlook on life. He is a true and kind man and I appreciate all he has done for the photography community as well.

This is very sad news indeed. I know the pain, the joy, and the hope one holds in their heart for the ones they love battling this terrible disease! My prayers and hope for Rick and those who love him! His contributions to the photogrpahic community have been inspiring & appreciated so much!

I hope Rick and Marilyn know how much Rick has meant to all of us. When we all sent him hats, he sent us self portraits wearing those hats. I suspect that was just a glimpse into the generous spirit of that man. My prayers go with both of them.

I was afraid something like this had happened! He will be in my prayers also. I always felt honored when one of my photos was chosen as a POTD.

I am so sorry to hear that. My thoughts are with Rick and his entire family.

although our association was limited the POTD's and one monthly award brought great personal joy and encouragement. I recognized early that something was amiss when the Azcolt web site remained static, never once considering Rick's health was the reason. My prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time.

My brother-in-law Rick is great. I will miss him dearly.

Rick would have been amazed that so many people thought about him. You have no idea how much comfort your messages & prayers have been to us.
