Rick Slaven, Rest in Peace

Published in Photography News by Kevin L. Kitchens on April 25, 2009 23:18

Just received word via Steve Wolfe that Rick Slaven passed away last night, April 24, 2009. May God bless his wife, son, and family in their time of grief.
I received a call from Rick's wife Marilyn this morning saying Rick died last night. He went peacefully.

No arrangements yet. He is to be cremated and said Rick didn’t want a service so to speak. Maybe a Celebration of Life?

We laughed and said maybe we could hold it at our old “watering hole”, Brennan’s Pub and Grub.

Rick would like that.

Rick awarded me my first ever POTD on his site and that recognition stimulated my desire to take better photos and improve my skills. He honored me by submitting his work from time to time to this little site as well. While he never submitted often, he did have four POTD here as well.

You can view them at his profile page.

UPDATE: Former site member Mark Westlake compiled this video tribute to Rick set to music and Rick's photos.

Both Rick and Azcolt will be sorely missed. May his family be assured that Rick made many friends and that we all wish them the best in this time of sadness.

Thanks for posting this, Kevin. Rick was a real inspiration to me -- to all of us -- and I had the good fortune of spending a great time with him and Roger (the hotel) Hogan at SE Arizona's Chiricahua Mountains last September. The three of us were planning on a reunion there this May, but alas...He will be greatly missed.
Mark Westlake commented on April 26, 2009 08:57:
We have lost a true friend and a great photographer. Although the news of Rick's death was not unexpected it's still hard to take. Rick fought his illness with a totally positive attitude and I'm sure he has been an inspiration to many others. A great guy! My thoughts are with his wife Marilyn, son Josh and the family. Rest easy brother.

Rick was a very well liked man; and I am very thankful that I had the opportunity to chat with him from time to time! I will remember him for the videos he shared with me; the one especially of the owls. May he rest in peace!

I am so sorry to hear about Rick. He and I shared a love of raptors. I hope that he is soaring above us on the winds and at peace.

thanks for keeping us informed Kevin. I will miss his sight very much and always enjoyed that no matter how good my photo were to guarantee it would be picked on his sight it had to have a horse in it. It became almost like I knew him personally. Life is to short for some of the good ones.

I too was saddened by the news of Rick's passing. He will be missed but like Donna said, hopefully he's soaring above us on the winds and that he is at peace. My deepest sympathies to his wife and family.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Marilyn, Josh, and the rest of the Slaven family. As had been stated above, his photo family will miss him greatly too. He was an inspiration to us all. If only we could all live so valiantly. I take comfort in knowing of Rick's strong faith, and that we know where he is. Peace to his memory, and comfort to those he left behind.

I did'nt know Rick Slaven. I live in Costa Rica. But from what I read from all of you, he surely seems to have been a good man. As a fellow photographer, I want to join in with my prayers and thoughts for him and his family. I very much know what they are going through. I also lost my wife to cancer five years ago, at age 46. She also went peacefully, like he did. That is a comfort to know.
